About Jessica

I have been running courses in childbirth and the postnatal period in Hackney for nearly 30 years. I started training with the National Childbirth Trust and Active Birth Centre after having my own babies. I have taught through NCT, as well as in health and children’s centres, but now work independently in the attic of my home in Stoke Newington.  I believe my integrated yoga, birth and baby package offers the most comprehensive preparation for these life changing events.  Through weekly contact from 24 weeks onwards, the learning is consolidated, we get to know each other and friendships are strengthened.  Most importantly it is great to follow through so that new mothers don’t feel left alone with their babies afterwards and we have a postnatal course together.

I have previously taught other formats, such as stand-alone yoga, couples classes and weekend workshops and, although convenient, I find this joined up approach is by far the most satisfying.

My enthusiasm is for linking up the amazing physical and emotional changes of parenthood, to help women and men get the best births they can, but not to strive for any particular kind of birth. Through my classes I like enabling people to connect up so that parenthood becomes a social experience and local baby friends can be made non-competitively. I have attended many births and have first-hand knowledge of what it is like as a birth partner. Nowadays I’m increasingly interested in understanding how babies develop as individuals and how parents can be helped to enjoy getting to know their babies from the beginning, as well as later with their babies together in groups.

I have trained as a parent-infant group psychotherapist and work in other settings with families across different parts of London too. For many years I represented users in Hackney on the City and Hackney maternity services committee, where I wrote a guide to local maternity services. I contribute to books and journals in writing about birth, early parenting and group work, and also train professionals in this field.
